As a child, I witnessed the heartache of losing multiple family members before reaching my teenage years— I said goodbye to several uncles, aunts, cousins, and many family friends. They all passed for various reasons, such as accidents and sickness.
The tragedy was compounded by the fact that many of these family members hadn't planned for their passing, leaving their loved ones behind to grapple with uncertain futures. Some children were left vulnerable, subject to my squabbling family's conflicts, uncertainties, and whims.
One of my cousins left behind three young children. They lived with my family for a while, then went to Europe to live with one of their aunts. Another family member left behind a son who went to live with his dad.
I remembered the conversations among the adults as they huddled together, their faces etched with worry as they discussed the situations, organized funerals, and pooled together funds for burials.
I didn't get what insurance was all about back then, but the urgency in the conversations spoke volumes about the importance of being prepared; those conversations stuck with me.
In my Caribbean upbringing, talking about these things with children wasn't really a thing and reserved for adult conversations only. Leaving children in the shadows and with our imaginations. Children were to be seen but not heard.
As an avid young reader, seeking knowledge. I dug into books on family protection from the library. The librarian told me if I wanted to understand a subject well, I should read at least twelve books on the subject, and I did. And I still use that advice in my life today.
Growing up, I made a silent vow never to burden my loved ones in the same way, and I wouldn't let my family go through that kind of struggle. Determined to shield my family from the financial strain of unexpected tragedies. When I started my own family, I put things in place like life insurance and other family protection safeguards. My mom thought I was overdoing it.
At that time, I did not recognize my actions were based on what I saw and felt as a child after losing my family members, and that vow I made to protect my family if something should happen to me was the reason I was so driven to protect my children.
That promise I made in the innocence of my youth drives me forward with unwavering purpose. I am passionate about empowering others with the tools and understanding they need to shield their loved ones from the harsh realities of life's uncertainties.
I want to help people understand how to keep their families safe and secure without all the stress and the weight of financial worry. It is more than just financial security; it's about peace of mind and the reassurance that, even in the face of adversity, families can weather the storm together, emerging stronger and more resilient than before.
It's about giving people the knowledge and tools to keep their families safe and secure, no matter what life throws their way. Through education and advocacy, I aim to ensure that no family endures the same anxieties that once plagued mine.
